It stands for Cascade Style Sheet, basically it's style sheet language (that's used to describe the presentation of structured document) which defines the layout of the page, how page looks like? e.g. Font,font color/size etc. defined in CSS.In short it's used to describe the semantics of web page/document written in markup language.

CSS Beyond the beginning

In 1970's Cascading Style Sheets were developed in order to provide a consistent approach to web document's style information.It was difficult and complex when worked it with HTML in starting as browsers variation also effects the consistency of web design.So nine style sheets were presented at that time to get and two of them made the beginner's CSS.
As by time the CSS faces different levels and variations, We can categories it as CSS2,CSS1, CSS3. The CSS1 became recommendation of W3C and it was public in 1996,after this CSS2, W3C was developed in 1988 in may which include new features e.g. absolute, relative, and fixed positioning of elements.
The CSS3 is still underdevelopment since 15 December, 2005. It's modularized based and many recommendations included in it.
